Old Scratch Comes to Appalachia

On the day the rats came to town The cat was nowhere to be found The piper was asleep and drooling on his chin Blight had set its sights to burrow from within The day disorder came to take control The piper just denied and crawled back in his hole The masses took the lie he’d fed them from the start The rats had come to town – but soon they would depart Crying and dying – as rats gnaw on remains Dying but still buying what saturates the brains Lying – defying – the piper sells the souls Crying and dying – shovels filling up the holes Since the day that the rats came to town Lives and loves have broken down All have been asleep and missed a simple rhyme The biggest rat of all was here with us all the time

Dirt between my toes – here I go Down the path to my destruction Lust inside my brain – throbbing pain Wading through all this obstruction The voice it calls – grabbed by the balls Through the haze embrace temptation How the hands caress – allow access Oblivion and revelation It flows in my veins – it feels no shame It leads me to the spider’s parlor In hot distress - watch it undress It begs and it can wait no longer What’s behind those eyes – in disguise Wiling with pretentious beauty Dancing on the fringe – comes unhinged Drains me until I am empty The voice it screams – it haunts my dreams Will not stop til it is sated How the claws dig in – my medicine This pleasure that is sorely hated It beats in my heart – tears me apart It leads me down into the squalor I can’t believe – how can it be Beauty could be such a fucking monster It eats me alive – how I despise This whore and her endless hunger Insatiable – and it will pull Til I can’t crawl out from under
3.
Turn off the lights and let me sit in the darkness Lower the sound so I can’t hear Footsteps outside that mark the march of the dying Lucidity and hope have disappeared A willful ignorance has taken over The dam has given way and water pours In laughter they run although the deed has been done The lie assassinates with no remorse A ticking time bomb with an avoidable ending Diffusers ridiculed and turned away Innocents cry while pointing out the solution Cluelessness is dancing on display Don’t turn on the lights as you are leaving The darkness suits the feelings of our fate In shadow I will wish to see an end to the anguish But darkness laughs and whispers to me that it’s too late
4.
Gather ‘round – have a sit down Meltdown – forgetting how to breathe Issues – bring the blues So much to lose – too tired to bereave Waiting patiently without guarantee What’s walking behind me? Used to be a friend – but that has found an end In this new modern world Misery – dishonesty Treachery – insisting they are right Such a cause – many flaws A stop to pause might put it all in sight Must it be this way – look what you portray And put it on display Poisoning our thoughts – you’ll find what you have sought In the new modern world Sunset – place your bets Cold sweat – when winning you will lose Take aim – place the blame No claim – receipt for all that’s due Can’t go on like this – daytime in darkness Drowned in prejudice See our children cry – what we leave when we die Is this new modern world

Conjured 05:39
Twelve o’clock – doors are locked – comes the knock Hands bring down sorrow Hidden, sick – emphatic – safe from tricks Beg, steal, or borrow Crawling waste – such distaste – how we’ve braced Monsters and what they’ve fractured Turning wheel – flee what’s real – mute the feels In the world I’ve conjured Pathetic slice of what a life should be Half-past one – overrun – when it’s done Submerged a little longer Fades the shouts – not the doubts – won’t come out Has it satisfied its hunger Pathetic life that slices into me Crouched in the corner til it goes away Then walk the landscape I’ve conjured today Scars do not bleed here deep down in my mind Block out the maligned Cathartic as I slip into the dream Night has died – hands were tied – justified If I would commit the murder Slip away – shades of gray – more today Carry on the hell much farther
6.
Pulse 05:10
The world opened up and swallowed me whole Consumed by all the miles – and my broken weary soul Disassembled, disavowed, disallowed and then disowned Dissipating hope – I look so hard to find a home So afraid to be alone—so afraid here on my own In the light so briefly but now forced to run and hide Man of cloth lurks below and seeks to rob me of my Pride Rallies congregations to bury me deep in the sand Can’t they just love me for who I am? So afraid be alone—can’t feel safe upon my bones Such fear – so near – so many tears – it’s here The world opened up to sweep me away Extinguish the light into shades of black and gray Closing minds that open wounds in the name of a counterfeit god With the sin of their own they spare the rod So afraid to be alone—my pulse a heavy drone
7.
Sit there in the dark with another lie Sit there in the dark and hide from prying eyes Sit there in the dark and cry Loneliness unhinged your mind And revealed the hate inside Sit there in the dark and wish away the stares No life, no hope, no chance, no love from anywhere Lash out but no one seems to care Mirror – what is looking back Sightless eyes plan the attack We see the trail of blood and know who you accuse Allegations – further lies – but you did this to you Stare into the eyes of those you hoped to shame The sound of laughter in your ears that cannot take the blame You see a trail of bodies, but only in your mind The vengeance you could not hand out from memory so unkind The last attempt to silence them is sinking like a stone No one left to drown but you – your doom is yours alone Sit there in the dark and wonder what went wrong Sit there in the dark – the place where you belong A joke void of humor and no one played along No one there to shed a tear Darkness amplifies the fear
8.
Stand with me – stand with me I’ll stand with you ‘til we can stand no more Walk with me – and talk with me Walk with me – stomp the ground with me Walk with me – this road goes on and on Cry with me – sigh with me Cry with me – you just may die with me Cry with me – as our sorrow turns to rage Stand with me – alongside of me You will see – there is a multitude of me Stand with me – we march into the unknown Stand with me – with a will that’s hard as stone Stand with me – and you’ll never stand alone
9.
I don't need a thousand horses to get away from you I don't need a thousand courses to run away, it's true All I need is one solution and to do what I must do I don't need a million dollars to buy some freedom for my soul I don't need a million hollers – vacate with that rigmarole All I need is one solution – what I touch will turn to gold I won’t be pigeonholed I don't need a billion preachers to pray away my sins I don't need a billion creatures telling me the shape I'm in All I need is one solution and the healing will begin With a fine shit-eating grin I don't need a hundred hypocrites to tell me how to live I don't need a talking pile of shit pissing on my narrative All I need is one solution and that’s zero fucks to give Yes indeed, that one solution is zero fucks to give
10.
The night he came – his train rumbled through in the dark He smiled at the thought of the lives that he would consume His journey long – his ravenous appetite cried The fruit dangled ripe on the tree He walked alone and waited for the sun to rise When worker bees would emerge from their hives The fires and pyres with flickering arms opened wide Waited as the seduction was forming its plan Offered them the world and torches burned blood in the sky Deceived the hungry and told them the hunger would end Gathered the flock and preyed upon their exhausted minds Promised them pleasures they had been denied The evening came – obedience given in blood Sins of the flesh turned to sins of the mind The dying and crying succumbed if they did not believe Ravaged by the junkies that lined up for miles The night he left – his footprints still burning the ground The children slept – gnashing their teeth as the nightmares began The thoughts of the many became those of one Trapped in devotion just to continue to live A shriek as the voices of militants rose to the sky Believe as we do or be leveled to dust The Son the messiah smiled as he boarded the night train To the next destination – his appetite cried
