Dee Calhoun Presents Edgar Allan Poe's "A Dream Within a Dream"

by Screaming Mad Dee

1.
Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow — You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand — How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep — while I weep! O God! Can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream?
2.
Golden threads spilling down—gateway to the next adventure Sunlight on my hands—grabs ahold and whisks away Dawn before my eyes beckons me to feast and come I taste the food of the gods at the Altar of Venus Golden threads touch the ground—engorged with life’s promises Sunlight scattered now as pawns and clouds march ‘cross the sky Twilight dims my eyes—the feast intoxicates the flame I sense the truth that lies ‘neath the Altar of Venus Golden threads turning brown—devastated broken dreams Desperate night arrives—grabs ahold to pull me down The black around its eyes—the feast alive—must get away Refute the food of the gods—escape from the Altar of Venus

The angels of madness are looking for me I ran before and must run again Saddest existence brought from the abyss Claws dipped in venom puncture skin Assurances coming—the promise of love Hollow hope that the sting subsides Burning affection leads only to pain Carves you up deep inside The feigning salvation revealing itself Enjoyment fades—wasted years Mistrials—misfires go on and on Drown sober in tears I stand here in grief as it happens again I’ve lost count the days misplaced A bold-faced lie when I’m told nothing’s wrong What’s right is cold and disgraced The angels of madness so close—I can feel They pierce the dark with prying eyes The saddest existence they seal with a kiss And yet they seem the less of lies Tonight I will rest and their chase is at end I’ll be damned, I've been charmed Look past their eyes at what's hopeless behind We leave arm in arm

Black magic woman – now you’ve cast your spell Brought on the heartache – turned all joy to hell Engage the agony to win at any cost I fight the tears and count the years – I know I’ve lost No option now except to move along A waste of time in arguing who was right or wrong Gaze into my eyes as I say my last goodbyes Gaze into you and I see thunder and gray skies In solitude now – within the wind and rain At loss to figure out – answers sought in vain Love bites – jaws of death snap across your chest Spits out half of you and then consumes the rest The part of me that’s gone still pains me in the dark This ragged scar may heal but never fades the mark Pathway uncertain as rain fills up my eyes While roaring on above – the thunder and gray skies Will you remember me – all the time we had Differentiate good times from bad The storm will linger for a while but then Something will come along and make me live again Meantime I’ll wander until I find the light One spark that I’ll embrace to end this weary night Now I await the day when puddles have gone dry And sun has chased away the thunder and gray skies
